Few vehicles represent the history of B M Stafford & Sons Ltd quite like the iconic AEC Mandator. More than just a lorry, it symbolises the company's transition from its agricultural roots into a respected national haulage business and stands as a lasting reminder of the people who built the company we know today.
A History Built on Hard Work
The story of B M Stafford began in 1935, when Benjamin Milburn Stafford took over the Mark Wakefield Contractor business. Originally focused on agricultural contracting and threshing, the business gradually expanded into road haulage as farming became more mechanised and the demand for reliable transport grew.
Key milestones in the company's history include:
1935 – Benjamin Milburn Stafford took over the business.
1940s–1960s – Growth through agricultural contracting and early haulage using British-built vehicles.
Late 1960s – Introduction of the AEC Mandator, marking the company's move into larger-scale general haulage.
1970s – Expansion into nationwide transport operations.
2003 – Purchase of the Hetton-le-Hole depot.
2015 – Redevelopment of the Hetton warehouse and offices.
2021 – Expansion with a 50,000 sq ft warehousing facility at Belmont, Durham.
Today – B M Stafford operates a modern fleet providing nationwide haulage, pallet distribution, warehousing, and specialist logistics services.
The AEC Mandator
The AEC Mandator became one of Britain's most recognisable heavy goods vehicles during the 1950s through to the early 1970s. Built by the Associated Equipment Company (AEC), it earned a reputation for strength, reliability, and durability.
Typical features included:
British-built engineering renowned for its quality.
The dependable 11.3-litre AEC diesel engine.
Available as 4x2 and 6x4 tractor units, as well as rigid chassis.
Designed to meet the demands of Britain's rapidly expanding road transport industry.
For many drivers, the Mandator was remembered for its character as much as its capability. It featured heavy steering, manual gearboxes, and a rugged driving experience, yet it was respected for its reliability and straightforward mechanical design. Properly maintained, these vehicles provided many years of dependable service.
At BM Stafford, the introduction of the AEC Mandator in the late 1960s represented far more than a new vehicle. It marked an important step in the company's evolution, helping transform the business from agricultural contracting into a professional general haulage operation serving customers across the country.
Preserving Our Heritage
Recognising the importance of the company's history, Managing Director Mark Stafford made the decision to purchase and restore an original AEC Mandator, similar to those that formed part of BM Stafford's early haulage fleet.
This was far more than the acquisition of a classic truck. It was a tribute to the generations whose dedication, hard work and determination established the family business.
The restored Mandator is dedicated to the memory of Milburn Stafford, the second generation of B M Stafford & Sons Ltd. His commitment to the business helped shape its growth and laid the foundations for the modern company that continues to operate today.
Today, the Mandator serves as a moving piece of BM Stafford's history. It reminds employees, customers, and visitors of where the company began, the values that have guided it for more than 90 years, and the family legacy that continues to drive the business forward.
"While our fleet now features the latest technology and modern vehicles, the AEC Mandator reminds us that our greatest strength has always been the people behind the wheel and the generations of the Stafford family who built this business."
This heritage vehicle stands not only as a tribute to Milburn Stafford, but as a celebration of BM Stafford's enduring commitment to quality, reliability, and family values.
